Here are a group of vehicles parked out on the lake. There are several feet of ice and about 20 feet of water under these trucks. Note the "tip-ups" over the ice fishing holes. Viewed: 1183 times.

Another group of ice fishers on Pleasant Lake. In the summer, these folks have a large dock and a number of watercraft in this same spot. Viewed: 1088 times.

A group of snowmobilers are coming the other way across Pleasant Lake. If you go the opposite direction you can go on the trails in Alexander that connect with thousands of miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Maine. Viewed: 1064 times.

We move now to Round Pond in Charlotte, Maine for the Calais Rod & Gun Club's annual Ice Fishing Derby. Viewed: 1165 times.

Held each year in February, this event attracts hundreds of people. All of the pictures you will see here were taken on the lake. Viewed: 1074 times.

Seeing the ice shacks that people construct is an interesting thing. Some people make simple little buildings, while others put a great deal of effort into it. Viewed: 1117 times.

Some folks fish right through the floor of their shack while others use it as a vantage point to keep warm while they watch their tip-ups. Viewed: 1090 times.

We drove our car out onto the ice and snapped photos of a number of ice fishing shacks as we circled Round Pond. It is about a 30 minute circle to go around on the ice. Viewed: 1189 times.

The temperature was right at zero farenheit on this frigid February day in Downeast Maine. Some folks might be nervous about driving around on a lake in their car - over a half mile from shore, but the lakes freeze several feet deep and there are over a hundred cars and trucks on the ice on this day. Building an ice fishing shack could be a lot of fun. They can be built with just about anything. In the Summer you will them out behind people's houses or sitting on a trailer waiting for Winter. Viewed: 1109 times.

You can also purchase them "tent style" to set up on the spot. Folks come out this day - "Free Fishing Day in Maine" to try and win some money by catching a "tagged fish." Today there are two fish worth $1000 and one worth $500 somewhere under all of this ice. Viewed: 1157 times.

The first thing you will want in your ice fishing shack is heat! Sitting around with your friends, enjoying a few cold beverages, some warm heat, and a chance to win some money - sounds like a perfect Winter day in Maine! Viewed: 1107 times.

Although it is called a "pond," Round Pond is a large lake located about 10 miles from the border with New Brunswick Canada. The Calais Rod & Gun Club has it's headquarters just across from the lake and hosts activities there year around. Viewed: 1011 times.

You can see a lot of tip-ups in this shot. There were hundreds, maybe over a thousand of them on the lake. You have to be careful when driving around not to run them over. One person placed his right in the middle of a road across the lake. Perhaps he was suggesting that the road be re-routed. Viewed: 1121 times.
